MANILA — The Department of Health (DOH) said it is looking into several reports that a Philippine company employing a multilevel marketing (MLM) scheme is bribing doctors to prioritize prescribing their medicines to their patients.

“We are still investigating what company this is – mayroong kumpanya diumano na gumagamit ng multilevel marketing para mag-recruit ng mga doktor at ang mga doktor ay binibigyan ng mga insentibo, mga regalo, mga pabuya para sila po ay mag-reseta ng mga particular na brand ng gamot,” DOH Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo said in a televised briefing.
“We are still investigating what company this is – mayroong kumpanya diumano na gumagamit ng multilevel marketing para mag-recruit ng mga doktor at ang mga doktor ay binibigyan ng mga insentibo, mga regalo, mga pabuya para sila po ay mag-reseta ng mga particular na brand ng gamot,” DOH Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo said in a televised briefing.
Domingo said the practice is in violation of the Code of Ethics of the medical profession by the Philippine Medical Association, which prohibits medical doctors from accepting payments or financial inducements from medical and pharmaceutical companies in exchange for preferring their products over others.

“So, this is an ongoing investigation, we are looking into this and in fact, kami po, I would reach out na rin po on behalf of the Department of Health, sa ating mga kapwa doktor, alam po natin na mas maraming doktor ay honest. Ang ating concern is ang ating pasyente, nanumpa tayo niyan, 'The patient is our first and only concern' actually, kapag gumagamot tayo,” he said.

He urged those who know about the alleged scheme to get in touch with the Food and Drug Administration's Field Regulatory Operations Office.
