MANILA — The robotics team of West Rembo Elementary School, now part of Taguig City has received financial aid from Makati Mayor Abby Binay to join a competition in Texas

West Rembo students Rio Pauline Dames, Cassandra Elyze Cruz, Andrew Lijarso and Zyric Abines are part of the 2024 VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas, Texas from April 25 to May 3, 2024.

“Even though West Rembo Elementary School is no longer part of Makati, I decided to help them using my personal funds so they have less to worry about and can focus on  the competition. They bring pride to the nation and deserve our full support,” Binay said in a release.

Team members received P58,000 in pocket money and the mayor also covered their airfare and accommodations.

West Rembo is among the Enlisted Men's Barrio (EMBO) barangays that the Supreme Court has ruled are under the jurisdiction of Taguig.

Binay said she extended assistance after the students' parents sought additional funding for the team.

The transfer of the EMBO barangays from Makati, the second wealthiest city in the Philippines, has raised concerns over local government services and support.

"For the past seven years, Makati has been providing public school students with age-appropriate Robotics kits suited to their development level," the Makati city government said in a statement.

"For the more experienced users, advanced kits with sophisticated features and capabilities were provided, such as complex construction of robots and complex programming," it also said.
