Maria Tan ABS-CBN News/file"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">People shield themselves from the midday heat as they pass by a park fountain on Shoe Avenue in Marikina City on April 16, 2024. <em id="isPasted">Maria Tan ABS-CBN News/file</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — State weather bureau PAGASA warned Monday of possibly even hotter weather in the month of May despite &quot;weakening&quot; of the El Niño phenomenon.</p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/4/28/heat-index-remains-at-dangerous-levels-in-several-areas-of-ph-2320">READ: Heat index remains at dangerous levels in several areas of PH</a></div><p>PAGASA Weather Specialist John Manalo said in a televised briefing that based on previous data, hottest temperatures in the country are usually recorded in May.</p><p>&quot;Kung ico-compare natin iyong El Niño years, kasi isa sa nagti-trigger nitong matataas na heat index na ito ay iyong El Niño natin, although weakening na siya ngayon pero nagpe-persist pa rin po ang effect niya,&quot; Manalo explained.</p><p>&quot;Usually during May po talaga may pinakamatataas na temperature and heat index na nao-observe,&quot; he added.</p><p>El Niño&#x27;s impact is also worse this year than in the previous years, Manalo said.</p><p>PAGASA on Saturday recorded the highest heat index in the country&#x27;s history in Iba, Zambales with 53 degrees Celsius, which is considered under &quot;extreme danger&quot; category.</p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/regions/2024/4/29/iba-zambales-hits-53-c-heat-index-36-areas-face-danger-heat-levels-950">READ: Iba, Zambales hits 53 C heat index; 36 areas face danger heat levels</a></div><p>On Monday, 36 locations in the Philippines have been placed under &quot;danger category&quot; for having heat index of 42 to 51 degrees Celsius.</p><p>&quot;Ine-expect pa po natin iyan na madadagdagan pa. So iyong magnitude din po ng mga heat index na iyan ay magi-increase din as we approach the first and second week ng ating month of May,&quot; Manalo said.</p><p>PAGASA noted that hot temperature might only begin to drop in June. </p><p>&quot;Ine-expect po natin na onset po ng rainy season natin ay maaaring magkaroon ng somewhat delay. Usually ito po ay nagsisimula from second half ng May or first half of June. Pero maaari po na magkaroon tayo ng 50 percent chance na after June pa siya mag-start,&quot; Manalo said.</p><div><strong>&#x27;CONSERVE WATER, HYDRATE&#x27;<br/></strong></div><p>Meanwhile, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum mentioned that 10 to 13 tropical storms are expected to enter the territory, mainly during the latter part of the year when La Niña sets in. He explained that although El Niño is ending, the dry spell will persist due to the transition.</p><p>&quot;El Niño is ending, but the drought condition persists due to the transition to La Niña. Based on historical evidence, this transition coincides with delayed rainfall and insufficient moisture,&quot; he said.</p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/3/6/el-nino-weakens-but-will-keep-temperatures-high-un-weather-agency-1057">READ: El Nino weakens but will keep temperatures high, UN weather agency says</a></div><p>Meanwhile, the water level in Angat Dam is at 188 meters, still above the minimum operating level. </p><p>According to DENR Undersecretary Carlos David, the public is encouraged to make a conscious effort in conserving water. He mentioned that activities like cleaning cars using garden hoses are prohibited in NCR. </p><p>&quot;Ipinagbabawal na po ang mga activities gaya ng pagdilig ng ating garden gamit ang mga halaman at garden hose. Six liters per minute po ang gamit ng tubig pag garden hose ang ginagamit natin, pwede pa rin ang tabo at timba. Bawal rin po maghugas ng driveway at maglinis ng kotse gamit ang garden hose,&quot; he stated. </p><p>However, he clarified that no fines or penalties would be issued for violators. </p><p>&quot;Meron tayong mga DENR personnel na umiikot para sabihan ang mga residente, hindi lang naman tungkol sa mga bawal na activities, kundi pati na rin sa mga water conservation initiatives,&quot; he said. </p><p>Health Secretary Teodoro Hermosa advised the public to avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures during the day. </p><p>&quot;It&#x27;s very important na wag ma-expose. This is an exposure illness, so hindi ka dapat lumabas sa mga mainit na lugar. The other high-risk individuals are those who work outside or engage in recreational sports. Kailangan nilang maging maingat at iwasan ang recreational activities mula 10 ng umaga hanggang 4 ng hapon,&quot; he advised. </p><p>But since the public is urged to conserve water, bathing multiple times a day is not advisable. Secretary Hermosa shared some tips to cool down, such as using an umbrella or moisturizing with a misting spray. </p><p>&quot;Use basang bimpo and hydrate. Now, ang tip ko sa hydration is very simple, people in sports have learned this already.
