MANILA — State weather bureau PAGASA on Tuesday expressed willingness to work with the Department of Education (DepEd) to formulate guidelines on the suspension of classes on the basis of extreme heat.

This follows the recommendation of Valenzuela Representative Eric Martinez for PAGASA to draft new protocols following the declaration of many schools since last week to shift to alternative mode of teaching, including online classes and modular learning.

"Of couse kailangan namin ng assistance ng mga local government units and even iyong ibang mandated agencies, para halimbawa iyong sinusulong na cancellation of classes pertaining to certain values of heat index ay pwede balangkasin with the Department of Education upang nang sa gayon ay mas maging accurate information po ang maiparating natin sa ating mga kababayan," Villafuerte said.

Villafuerte said heat index in Dagupan City in Pangasinan, La Union, Tuguegarao in Cagayan, Palawan, Zamboanga City, Cotabato City are now in dangerous category.

"I-limit natin ang time natin na we are spending outdoors lalo na sa katirikan po ng araw lalo na sa 10am hanggang 3 to 4pm medyo mainit po talaga. Kung idadagdag kasi natin ang direktang sikat ng araw, dagdagan pa ang nararamdaman nating init ng araw, and then palagiang inom ng tubig upang di tayo ma-dehydrate at iwasan ang paginom ng tsaa, kape soda," Villafuerte advised.
