DepEd had already decided to "gradually shift" to the old June-March school calendar but Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) said it should be fast tracked as current circumstances showed that March to May may not be conducive to face-to-face classes due to extreme heat.

"We believe it is now necessary to expedite the return to the June-March cycle so that we do not suffer the same consequences in 2025 as we did in 2023 and what we currently endure," the group said.

HOW IT CAN BE DONE
The TDC explained that DepEd can expedite the return to the June–March cycle by making SY 2024–2025 a "transition period" towards the new academic calendar.

"It should end on April 11, 2025, earlier than DepEd's plan of May 16, 2025. By our calculations, this would be around 170 days, not far from the 179 days of this year (SY 2023–2024)."

For this school year, the adjusted school calendar only consists of 179 days or from August 29, 2023, to May 31, 2024, the TDC explained.
