Now it can be told: Some senators called then Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri last Sunday to assure him of their support only to reverse their decision and vote for the new Senate President Francis Escudero on Monday.

Sen. Nancy Binay made the revelation Wednesday after 15 senators voted to back the new Senate leadership.

Binay said she decided to stick with Zubiri as she sees nothing wrong with the latter's leadership, particularly in maintaining the Senate's independence.

Migz sa kanila eh bakit sila yung humihingi ng dispensa?" she said in a TeleRadyo Serbisyo interview.

Zubiri earlier said he was dumbfounded and deeply hurt after finding out that Sen. Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa voted for his ouster despite Zubiri's backing of Dela Rosa's investigation on the PDEA Leaks issue.

Explaining his vote, Dela Rosa said he signed the resolution supporting Escudero because he and his PDP-Laban bloc colleagues Sen. Francis Tolentino and Sen. Christopher Lawrence Go had agreed to vote together on issues.

I want to stay, ayoko sana, pero yun ang usapan," he said.

He added his vote was "immaterial" to the resignation of Zubiri since Escudero had already secured the numbers to clinch the top post even before he signed the resolution. "My signature was already insignificant... Lumapit sila sa akin after the battle has been won. Meron na silang 14 na pirma,” he said.
