MANILA — The Senate has released from its custody former National Police Commission agent Eric "Pikoy" Santiago and former Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) agent Jonathan Morales, two resource persons in its probe into the "PDEA leaks" controversy.

The 2 were ordered detained by the Senate Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs over their conduct during the last hearing Monday.

The Office of the Senate Sergeant At Arms confirmed the release, which was approved by Senate President Francis Escudero.

"Sen. Jinggoy [Estrada] and Sen. Bato [dela Rosa] called me yesterday and requested for it since, according to them, we are already on recess. I signed their release after Sen. Bato, as chair, signed their release sometime late afternoon," Escudero said.

Upon a motion of Estrada, the Senate panel cited Morales in contempt for supposedly lying repeatedly to the committee.

Meantime, upon Dela Rosa's motion and with Estrada's concurrence, the panel held in contempt Santiago for alleged lying as well.

The supposed leaked PDEA documents linked several high-profile personalities in illegal drugs, including actress Maricel Soriano and President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.
