The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) finished transferring on Saturday 3,000 inmates from the old Quezon City Jail in Kamuning to a newer and bigger detention center in Payatas to solve overcrowding, especially amid the intense heat being experienced in the country.

Alam niyo naman po ang pinaka-main reason na nagkakasakit ang ating mga PDL sa selda tsaka sa kulungan ay dahil po sa sobrang sikip talaga,” said Perez.

The BJMP already has a nebulizer on standby near Sam’s cell. Some of his other cellmates also make use of it.

Perez said they have hired more health personnel working around the clock to address the medical needs of inmates.

“Sa laki nitong facility natin, nagdagdag po kami ng mga personnel. Mino-monitor namin yung mga health nila dahil alam niyo naman po sa panahon ngayon, uso ang mga diseases, katulad po nung mga galis-galis sa katawan, yung mga may sakit ng hypertension. Ang ginagawa namin, sine-separate namin sila sa ibang selda para mas mabigyan sila nang mas magadang atensyon,” Perez said.

The management of the New Quezon City Jail said it is also coordinating with the local government of Quezon City to better provide for the PDLs.

On Friday, the Supreme Court also directed judges across the country to conduct jail visits at least once before May 31, 2024 to check the conditions of PDLs amid the extreme heat.
