MANILA (UPDATED) — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday, Independence Day, urged Filipinos to protect their hard-won freedoms and never cower to threats of intimidation, invasion, and oppression.

"Isang karangalan na mapabilang sa lahing Pilipino na ang mga ninuno ay magiting at nakipaglaban upang maibalik ang kasarinlan at kapayapaan sa ating bansa," Marcos said in a video message for the 126th anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.

Marcos' message follows intensifying tensions between Manila and Beijing over the West Philippine Sea.

Marcos also urged Filipinos to keep up their courage and retain the spirit of unity and collaboration.

"Sa sarili nating pamamaraan, maaari tayong maging bayani ng ating makabagong panahon," the President said.

Marcos led a simple but solemn Independence Day flag ceremony at the Rizal Park in Manila on Wednesday morning.

It was attended by Philippine government officials and employees, personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, civil society organizations and members of the diplomatic corps.

The Philippine leader was accompanied by First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and their sons Ilocos Norte Representative Sandro Marcos, Simon, and Vinnie in raising the Philippine flag.

Marcos also offered a wreath of flowers at the monument of Philippine national hero Jose Rizal.

The singing of the Bagong Pilipinas Hymn and recitation of the Bagong Pilipinas Pledge were included in the Independence Day rites at the Rizal Park.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Martin Romualdez reminded Filipinos of the collective responsibility to continue fighting for freedom from poverty, corruption and injustice, as he led the Independence Day rites in front of the historic Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan.

House Deputy Minority Leader and ACT Teachers party-list Rep. France Castro called on Filipinos to fight for “real independence”, noting that while the Philippines is no longer a colony, the control of foreign colonizers remains to be felt in the country.

Manila 6th District Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr. remarked, “The question is, are we truly independent? …Does the Chinese government believe we're independent? I hope and pray that truly, our country will really be recognized as a sovereign country and independent.”

House Assistant Minority Leader and Gabriela party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas, meanwhile, called on Filipinos to defend the country’s sovereignty against encroachers and foreign intervention.

CIBAC party-list Rep. Eduardo “Bro. Eddie” Villanueva also expressed hopes the country will be able to fight poverty, corruption, and threats to its sovereignty.
