MANILA — Sen. Robin Padilla is seeking a Senate investigation into the Philippine National Police's (PNP) operation to serve the warrants of arrest against Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) leader Apollo Quiboloy at his Davao City compound last Monday.

"Was there a violation of the PNP's policy to respect human rights when its operatives conducted an operation on the KOJC premises in Davao City last June 10?" Padilla asked.

Over 100 policemen from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, Special Action Force, and other PNP units stormed the properties of Quiboloy, including the KOJC compound in Buhangin, Davao City, and the Prayer and Glory mountains in Barangay Tamayong early Monday.

The PNP said it conducted a "lawful operation" which was in "strict compliance with legal security protocols" and with due respect to all parties. Screengrab

The operation led to tensions between police officers and church members.

On Tuesday, the PNP asserted it followed legal security protocols when it served the warrants of arrest.

Quiboloy, who remains at large, is facing sexual abuse and trafficking cases in Davao City and Pasig City courts.

Padilla said his probe would determine if there was "unnecessary and excessive force" used during the operation.

"There is a need for the PNP to promote and protect human rights because these very acts are vital to the maintenance of public order, guarantee of public safety, and respect for the rule of law," Padilla said in the resolution.

Former President Rodrigo Duterte, a close ally of Quibiloy, described the PNP operation as "overkill."

Despite the tension, authorities said no one was reported hurt during the operation.
