Members of the Philippine National Police Regional Mobile Force Battalion (PNP-RMFB) conduct an inspection of an abandoned property in Barangay Senyora, Porac, Pampanga, on July 9, 2024. The property with resort-like amenities is believed to be part of an illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO), the Grand Palazzo Royale of the Lucky South 99, and used by its incorporators and Chinese big bosses for illegal activities, including scam modus, kidnapping, illegal detention, and human and sex trafficking activities. MANILA – Senators Juan Miguel Zubiri and Joel Villanueva have joined the call to ban Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs).

Zubiri agreed that POGOs’ social cost was  too high.

“Let’s ban POGOs in the country. Give them one year to two years to transition then totally ban them already,” the former Senate President said in a message.

“The revenue earned is not enough to justify their continued stay which results to criminality and immorality. Illegal trafficking of women, Illegal employment of workers pretending to be tourists, prostitution, kidnapping, gun running and murders remains unabated by mainland Chinese POGO operators,” he added.

Villanueva thanked the Marcos administration’s economic managers, the business community and Philippine National Police in supporting the proposed ban.

“Ang pagpapaalis po sa mga POGO ang magiging pinakamagandang regalo ng ating Pangulo sa taumbayan lalo na kung iaanunsyo n’ya ito sa kanyang ikatlong State of the Nation Address ngayong Lunes,” he said.

Aside from POGOs, Villanueva also called for the prohibition of all forms of online gambling.

The Senate Committee on Ways and Means held a hearing on July 16 to tackle Villanueva’s proposed Anti-Online Gambling Act, among others.

Committee Chairperson Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian said that online gambling should be monitored closely, especially following reports of around 7,000 illegal sites, of which 5,000 were already blocked.
