Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">The presence of the China Coast Guard (CCG) persists despite the effort of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to block them and assist the four main vessels of the second civilian resupply mission of the Atin Ito Coalition to the Bajo de Masinloc or Panatag Shoal in the West Philippine Sea on May 15, 2024. <em>Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — A Philippine Navy official said Tuesday there has been a “drastic reduction” in the number of Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea as Manila seeks to convene the potential Philippines-China Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) this month.</p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/5/29/china-out-of-their-mind-for-imposing-fishing-ban-in-disputed-sea-ph-navy-1326">• China &#x27;out of their mind&#x27; for imposing &#x27;unilateral&#x27; fishing ban in disputed sea: PH Navy</a></div><p>Data from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) showed that there were 95 Chinese vessels from June 25 to July 1, which included 13 coast guard, 6 People’s Liberation Army Navy, and 76 maritime militia vessels, particularly in hotspots Bajo de Masinloc, Ayungin Shoal, Pag-asa Island, as well as Julian Felipe Reef.</p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/6/25/maritime-expert-deployment-of-china-s-monster-ship-sends-message-to-ph-2005">• Maritime expert: Deployment of China&#x27;s &#x27;monster ship&#x27; sends message to PH</a></div><p>This was 34 less than the 129 vessels monitored from June 18 to June 24.</p><p>“There has been a drastic reduction of the PLA Navy, Chinese coast guard and the maritime militia in the area that we monitor in the West Philippine Sea,” Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad told reports in a briefing at Camp Aguinaldo headquarters.</p><p>Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Enrique Manalo said the department is pursuing the BCM to establish “confidence-building measures” that can create the basis for “more serious discussions” in the first part of July.</p><p>Trinidad refused to comment on the talks between the Philippines and China. </p><div><strong>SHANDONG, MONSTER SHIP</strong></div><p>Meantime, Trinidad said the Navy was aware and monitored the advanced Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong that reportedly patrolled the waters near the Philippines, but clarified that the South China Sea is a busy nautical highway.</p><p>“It could be likened to EDSA on any ordinary day. Ships coming through the strait of Malacca, the world’s busiest strait, exit into the South China Sea. Hence on any given day, there would be numerous ships, not only PLA, navy, coast guard, and maritime militia,” he said.</p><p>Foreign private monitors reported the sighting of Shandong near the Philippines main island of Luzon over the past days, on the heels of China Coast Guard’s monster ship that also conducted intrusive patrols in parts of South China Sea.</p><p>Trinidad said the Philippines regularly challenges all ships passing through its maritime borders, but did not give specifics on its communication with the aircraft carrier and the monster ship.</p><p>“The ships that transit through the maritime borders of the coastal state are challenged by the coastal state. We check their course, their speed, their name, where they came from, where they’re heading to. This is part of the established practice of navies and coast guards all over the world.
