MANILA -- More payouts are forthcoming for the claims of former Saudi workers, Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac has assured.

"We've also been told that there will be at least around 1,800 more forthcoming in the next few weeks. We're hoping that it will come in August…and thereafter, there will be another release of around 2,200 in the coming months," Cacdac said.

According to the DMW’s own list, there are a total of 10,554 overseas Filipino workers (OFW) with unpaid benefits from several Saudi construction companies that folded between 2015 and 2016 after the sharp drop in oil prices mid-2014.

The Saudi government has committed to the payment of the claims and so far, 1.95BPhp have been released to 2,500 workers.

"Our target by the end of the year is substantially, most of the 10,000 beneficiaries have been given their benefits and claims. So we're still, we continue to hope and work with the Saudi side. I of course will make another visit, in the course of the year, to Saudi Arabia to visit my counterpart," Cacdac adds.

Aside from the Saudi claims, the DMW is also hoping to review two labor agreements that the Philippines have with Saudi arabia.

"One is the 2013 Domestic Worker agreement and the other is the 2017 General Labor Agreement…the President definitely has directed us to to add on, to highlight, to modify or emphasize greater protection for our OFWs in Saudi Arabia," Cacdac says.

The DMW is also hoping to increase the Philippines’ Migrant Workers Offices (MWO) in Saudi Arabia to better protect OFWs and respond to their needs.
