Massive heaps of garbage have accumulated along the streets of Brgy. Tatalon, Quezon City, following the aftermath of floods spawned by the habagat and Typhoon Carina.

Residents said the flood brought in the waste, exacerbated by some locals disposing of damaged items and garbage.

"Galing po sa loob ng bahay ng inabot ng baha dahil sa baha na po puro putik tinambak na po sa kalye," said Aaron Tumbocon.

(It came from inside the house, which was flooded; everything was covered in mud, so we dumped it all on the street.)

The area has developed a bad stench, especially for the houses near the piles of garbage.

"Ngayon nangangamoy na siya mabaho na...tinitiis na lang namin, nagsasara ng bintana para di masyado yung amoy," said another resident, Adette de Guzman.

(It smells awful now; we just close our windows to avoid the stench.)

Jenylyn Facul expressed worries about the health of her young children.

"Sana po mahakot na yung basura kasi nangangamba po ako baka magkasakit yung mga anak kong maliliit...Amoy patay na daga, halo-halo na po...parang nawawalan ka ng gana kumain," Facul said.

(I hope the trash gets collected soon because I fear my young children might get sick. It smells like dead rats, a mix of all sorts of odors. It makes you lose your appetite.)

Thea Pola, a local eatery owner, is concerned about the impact the garbage is having on her business.

"Wala po kasing nagcocollect ng basura so dito nila tinambak lahat...Umaalingasaw na nga po ito pag tanghali kaso walang magawa...minsan may mga langaw na rin eh tapos ang baho-baho pa," Pola said.

(Residents are also dumping their trash here because there's no garbage collection service. The stench is unbearable, especially at noon. Sometimes, there are flies, and the smell is horrible.)

The accumulation of trash has also caused some parts of the streets to narrow to one lane, resulting in congestion.

"Masyadong masikip po kasi madaming basura eh...nahihirapan kaming pumasok sa loob...traffic talaga di gumagalaw diyan yung mga tricycle," said tricycle driver Oscar Pico Jr.

(The streets are too narrow because of the trash. We have a hard time getting through, and the traffic is barely moving.)

Residents reported seeing a truck on Saturday picking up some of the garbage. However, given the large amount of waste, they are unsure when the entire area will be cleared.

ABS-CBN News is trying to get a statement from barangay officials and Quezon City LGU, as of posting.
