MANILA (UPDATED) — Residents of Barangay Tatalon, Quezon City  are calling on village officials and the city government to take action on tons of garbage left by the massive flooding on Wednesday.

“‘Yong amoy niya. Tsaka padami siya nang padami. Hindi siya paunti. Sana makuha na siya. Ilang araw na (ang basura dito). Talagang sobrang perwisyo,” said resident Ado Santos.

(It's the smell, and the trash is piling up. I hope these can be collected because it has been several days. What a nuisance.)

Due to the huge amount of garbage dumped on the road, Kaliraya Street in Tatalon is impassable to cars, with only motorcycles and tricycles managing to squeeze through.

“Naku ang laking perwisyo, kasi kapareho niyan...anong oras na, pauwi na ko. Ano bang gagawin? Ano bang plano dito?” said Edgar Dimaculangan, who was dismayed after finding his car couldn't get past the trash on Kaliraya Street.

(This is a huge nuisance... What will be done? What are their plans for this?)

According to updates from the QC government, clearing operations  by the city's Department of Sanitation and Cleanup Works and its Engineering Department in flood-hit barangays are ongoing.

In Tatalon, even businesses like a beauty parlor and a bakery said the debris has kept customers away.

Some residents are also concerned that the uncollected trash could pose health risks.

BARANGAY: WE ARE DOING WHAT WE CAN

The barangay council said it has been in constant communication with the city government on the matter.

According to Barangay Councilor Ariel Rosales, there might be some delays with garbage collection because nearby barangays were also affected by flooding.

"From Day 1, sinisikap na namin. Pinaabot na namin ang advance information," he said.

(From Day 1, we have been trying to get the area cleared. We sent them advance information)

He added: "Humihingi po kami ng pang-unawa dahil ginagawa naman po namin sa part namin. Kaya lang, naghihintay tayo ng (garbage) truck."

(We are hoping for some understanding from residents because we are doing our part to clean up but we have to wait for a garbage truck to haul the trash)
