PASIG City— The Department of Education (DepEd) is optimistic that all remaining public schools affected by Typhoon Carina and southwest monsoon will be able to open their classes on Monday, August 5.

DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara said there were still 615 schools whose classes remained postponed as of Friday.

Majority of the schools or around 340 are in Central Luzon, 158 are located in the National Capital Region, 60 are in Calabarzon, while 57 are in the Ilocos Region.

Some of these schools are still being used as evacuation centers, Angara said.

“So ‘yun ang concerns namin—on how to help them open next week. Sana next week na ang pinaka-late,” Angara told reporters.

“Target so far is all. Huwag lang sana umulan ng malakas kasi some of these schools are flooded eh,” he added.

DepEd earlier said that 99 percent of the more than 47,000 public schools nationwide were able to open their classes on July 29, 2024.

As of August 2, enrollment numbers reached  23,340,101, which is 84.19 percent of DepEd’s target of 27,722,835 enrolled students for the school year 2024-2025.
