<p>MANILA — Both the emergency room (ER) and gymnasium that serves as a makeshift leptospirosis ward of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) have reached full capacity on Friday, hospital officials said.</p><p>This comes just several days after activation of the ward and exactly two weeks of widespread flooding caused by monsoon rains in Metro Manila.</p><p>Of the 125 patients currently at the ER, only 66 are in beds. The rest are being given medical attention while on wheelchairs or mono block stools.</p><p>NKTI’s Deputy Executive Director for Medical Services Romina Danguilan says while they are used to treating patients with leptospirosis, they observe cases to be more severe this year.</p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/lifestyle/health-wellness/2024/8/8/67-leptospirosis-cases-recorded-in-second-half-of-july-dengue-cases-on-uptrend-doh-1123">READ: 67 leptospirosis cases recorded in second half of July; dengue cases ‘on uptrend’ — DOH</a></div><p>“Nangangailangan sila ng dialysis. They also have pancreatitis, [hepatitis], and liver function abnormalities. Some have severe lung damage – ‘yung napupuno ng dugo ang kanilang baga so kailangan nila na ma-intubate, nakarespirator sila,” she said.</p><p>(The patients require dialysis. Some have severe lung damage while others have complications with their lungs requiring intubation and respirators.)</p><p>The NKTI said it has no problems with adding more beds but stressed the need for additional manpower to be able to attend to the patient’s needs more effectively.</p><p>Fortunately, the Philippine Red Cross and the Bicol Sanitarium heeded their call and sent medical personnel.</p><p>The Department of Health (DOH) assured the NKTI that it is cognizant of their needs and will respond in the most appropriate manner. It also advised the public as well as other facilities to avoid bringing patients to the NKTI.</p><p>“Ina-advise natin ang lahat: ‘wag dalhin lahat sa NKTI because baka naman hindi kailangan ilipat ng mga tao sa NKTI – meaning ang mga doctors, nurses – kung ‘yung pasyente ang pwedeng ilipat dala-dala ng ambulansiya,” said DOH Spokesperson Albert Domingo.</p><p>(We advise everyone to avoid bringing patients to the NKTI because there may be no need to transfer manpower – doctors and nurses – if the patients can after all be transferred via ambulances to other hospitals.)</p><p>The agency also assured the public of ample supply of doxycycline, an antibiotic used as prophylaxis for leptospirosis, even as more extreme weather and flooding are expected.</p><p>A price freeze on the drug is also in effect since the declaration of a state of calamity last July 24.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>RELATED VIDEO</strong></div><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BxCqxSGkrYM?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span></div>
