MANILA — The Philippine Coconut Authority is aiming to transform the local coconut industry through the conduct of its “Bayaniyugan” program which includes simultaneous coconut planting activities nationwide.

Under the program, PCA targets to plant 20 to 25 million trees every year until it reaches the target of 100 million in 2028.

“Yes, ang coconut planting po na ito ay mangyayari sa lahat ng rehiyon kasi ang PCA po ay nag-target po nang pagtatanim ng 100 million. And until August tina-target po namin na magkaroon na tayo ng 3 million coconuts being planted,” said Rosella Villaruel, Manager of the Trade and Market Development Department of the Philippine Coconut Authority, in a televised briefing.

“So, for the whole year of 2024, we target 8.5 million and hanggang ano po iyan ang target, taun-taon and every month kung kailangan ng ating mga partners na magtanim, magpapatanim po tayo until 2028, ang target po natin ay 25 million coconuts planted.”

Villaruel said they hope to increase the country’s coconut production with the project.

“So, with this coconut planting project, we are sure na lalaki po iyong ating production. But as to being number one and number two, subject din po iyan sa gagawing coconut planting ng ating karatig-bansa na Indonesia. But what we can assure is that, we would like to maintain our position as the number one coconut oil producer in the world,” she said.

“Sa ngayon po ay nasa 50 percent capacity of our oil millers and other coconut processors. So, if we increase our production, we can double and ensure na tayo ay mangunguna sa exports of coconut products, particularly coconut oil,” Villaruel continued.

“Ngayon po tayo, in the agricultural sector, coconut industry po iyong largest contributor. So, kapag ma-double natin iyong ating production, siyempre iyong ating export earnings ay lalaki rin po, ang ating jobs to be generated, lalaki din po and we will contribute to  food security and lalo na, it will provide a lot of opportunities for our coconut farmers in the area of value adding and enterprise development, so that ma-sustain po ang kanilang mga livelihood.”
