<p>MANILA — Taiwan on Saturday joined the usual voices in calling out China’s hostility against Philippine vessels following a new ramming incident involving Manila’s largest ship, which is stationed at Escoda Shoal (Sabina Shoal).</p><p>In a statement, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said it joins the United States in condemning China’s “flagrant violation of international law,” adding that its disregard for the rules-based order fuels escalation of regional instability.</p><p>A China Coast Guard vessel, with bow number 5205, on Saturday afternoon rammed the Philippine Coast Guard’s BRP Teresa Magbanua multiple times while loitering at Escoda Shoal, a strategic reef located just over 70 nautical miles from Palawan mainland and deep within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.</p><div style="margin-bottom:0px;line-height:normal"><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/8/31/watch-chinese-ship-rams-brp-teresa-magbanua-3-times-1657">WATCH: Chinese ship rams BRP Teresa Magbanua 3 times</a></div><div style="margin-bottom:0px;line-height:normal"><br/></div><p style="margin-bottom:0px;line-height:normal">The Philippines’ 97-meter multi-role response vessel has been stationed at Escoda since April in response to suspected attempts by China to reclaim and build there.</p><div style="margin-bottom:0px;line-height:normal"><br/></div><p style="margin-bottom:0px;line-height:normal">Manila’s presence has since received consistent challenges from China, including blocking and ramming other Philippine vessels trying to resupply the BRP Teresa Magbanua.</p><div style="margin-bottom:0px;line-height:normal"><br/></div><p style="margin-bottom:0px;line-height:normal">“Neither the Philippines nor other nations should be threatened by the CCP’s reckless ambitions,” Taiwan’s MOFA said. </p><div style="margin-bottom:0px;line-height:normal"><br/></div><p style="margin-bottom:0px;line-height:normal">Taiwan has its own government but the One China policy followed by most nations, including the Philippines, means a lack of formal diplomatic relations with most of the world. We stand with the Philippines in upholding international law,” said US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson in a post on X.</p><p>“The United States stands with its ally, the Philippines, and condemns the dangerous and escalatory actions by the People&#x27;s Republic of China (PRC) against lawful Philippine maritime operations in the vicinity of Sabina Shoal in the South China Sea on August 31,” US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a separate statement, noting that the incident was only one of the series of China’s “dangerous and escalatory actions.”</p><p>“The [PRC’s] unlawful claims of &quot;territorial sovereignty&quot; over ocean areas where no land territory exists, and its increasingly aggressive actions to enforce them, threaten the freedoms of navigation and overflight of all nations. The United State reiterates its call for the PRC to comport its claims and actions with international law and to desist from dangerous and destabilizing conduct,” he added. </p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/8/25/bfar-assessing-damage-to-vessel-after-ramming-incident-with-chinese-ships-1957">RELATED: BFAR assessing damage to vessel after ramming incident with Chinese ships</a></div><p>Miller reiterated Washington’s commitment to the Mutual Defense Treaty, which extends to armed attacks on Philippine armed forces, public vessels, or aircraft – including those of its Coast Guard – anywhere in the South China Sea.</p><p>In a separate statement, British Ambassador Laure Beaufils said the United Kingdom “is concerned about reports of yet more dangerous actions by a Chinese vessel near Sabina Shoal.”</p><p>She said on social media platform X that the UK is calling “once again for respect for international law, including UNCLOS, and adherence to the 2016 Arbitral Award which is legally binding on the parties.”</p><p>Japan Ambassador Endo Kazuya expressed support for the Philippines in upholding rule of law at sea.</p><p>He said Tokyo is “seriously concerned” over the collision and opposes any “any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion.”</p><p>Australia Ambassador HK Yu also shared the same concern and urged all countries to comply with international law, including the 2016 arbitral ruling.</p><div style="margin-bottom:0px;line-height:normal"><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/world/2024/8/25/will-german-warships-pass-through-the-taiwan-strait-930">READ: Will German warships pass through the Taiwan Strait?</a></div><div style="margin-bottom:0px;line-height:normal"><br/></div><p>“Australia shares the Philippines’ concerns about China’s destabilising behaviour at Sabina Shoal in the South China Sea.
