Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News </div>Around 1,000  families lost their homes on Saturday after a huge fire engulfed a residential area in Road 10, Barangay 105, Tondo in Manila.According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), nine buildings were affected by the fire, which started in one of the units before noon.The fire spread quickly, as seen in how fast the  BFP raised the alarm from first alarm to fifth alarm in less than 30 minutes.It reached Task Force Bravo at 1:33 p.m., which prompted around 40 firetrucks and hundreds of firefighters from Manila and nearby cities to respond.<div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/9/14/malaking-sunog-sumiklab-sa-tondo-maynila-2002">Malaking sunog sumiklab sa Tondo, Maynila </a></div>The Philippine Air Force 505th Brigade also deployed a helicopter with a bambi bucket to aid in the firefighting efforts.“Talagang napakahirap pong apulahin dahil ang ating involved establishment is made of light materials. Marami din silang mga stock na light materials dahil ito ang kanilang ikinabubuhay araw-araw, yung junk shop, yung pagbebenta ng secondhand wood or lumber, gulong,” said Fire Inspector Alejandro Ramos, chief of the Intelligence and Investigation Section of the Manila Fire District.Strong winds also made the situation worse.“Ang hangin kasi is one of the component of fire so lalo niyang pinalalakas ang apoy at ang direksyon po ay talagang dinamay niya ibang mga establishment,” added Ramos.The fire was declared under control at 6:20 p.m.According to Ramos, the estimated total damage is at P2.5 million.There were no casualties, and the BFP said it only recorded seven minor injuries.<div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/8/9/18-fire-volunteer-nasaktan-sa-sunog-sa-tondo-2135">18 fire volunteer, nasaktan sa sunog sa Tondo</a></div>Some residents were able to  bring some of their belongings as they fled their homes.“Nailabas naman po namin yung ibang mga gamit, mga bag… Naiyak lang po ako wala na kaming bahay,” said Margie Montehermoso.Another resident, Edna De Jesus, unfortunately was not able to save much. To make matters worse, she got separated from her 13-year-old son.“Yung isang anak ko hinahanap ko, di ko makita. Kanina pa ako nag-iikot… Makita ko lang (siya) kahit na wala na yung (bahay) kasi makakapagpundar pa naman,” said De Jesus. Several covered courts have been opened to serve as evacuation centers. <div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/3/24/50-families-affected-in-tondo-fire-2350" id="isPasted">50 families affected in Tondo fire </a> </div>The local government of Manila also vowed assistance, with Mayor Honey Lacuna and Yul Servo even coming to the area to check on the situation. Servo said each affected family usually get P10,000 each to help them rebuild their homes. Although the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, the BFP reminded the public to always be careful and vigilant to prevent fires.
