MANILA — The Philippine Army is working with the Philippine National Police to verify reports that some Army reservists and militiamen are involved with the “Angels of Death,” the alleged private army of jailed pastor Apollo Quiboloy.

Col. Reynaldo Balido Jr., deputy chief of the Army Chief Public Affairs, said some members of Quiboloy-led Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) are reservists.

KOJC station Sonshine Media Network Incorporated (SMNI) was accredited in 2015 as an affiliated reservist unit of the Philippine Army.

“They are on active duty status,” Balido said. “They are called the 2nd Signal Battalion Philippine Army Affiliated Reserve Unit. Tinap natin sila because of their expertise in communications, nagagamit natin.”

“But as to their involvement, we will closely coordinate with our law enforcement agency counterparts,” he continued.

Balido noted that the Philippine Army does not control the unit during peacetime; control over reservists only applies during wartime and national emergencies.

The official also clarified that reservists are supposed to be unarmed.

SMNI may lose reservist unit accreditation

Should SMNI be proven involved in violations, their affiliation with the Army may be revoked, and administrative charges may be filed against them, according to Balido.

The head of the company, who also serves as the commander, will face questioning.

“Kung mapatunayan ito sila, dahil sila nga ay duty-bound pa rin, meron silang dapat i-uphold na professionalism duty, honor, may mga corresponding disciplinary measures na ibibigay sa kanila kung mapapatunayan na nagkasala o may ginawang hindi akma sa kanilang sinumpaan,” said Balido.

The army also entered an agreement with SMNI in October 2022 "toward supporting the programs and efforts of the Philippine Army to inform the people and stakeholders in the country and abroad about the command’s efforts on security, peace, and nation-building," according to a Philippine Army release.
