Three hundred thirty-two candles were lit at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani on Saturday night in Quezon City to honor the martyrs and heroes who struggled during Martial Law. The event marked the 52nd anniversary of its declaration by the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. Simultaneous candle-lighting ceremonies were held at over 21 sites across the country, remembering those who sacrificed their lives in the fight against the dictatorship. Mathew Silverio, a student, said he continues to honor those who fought and died during the Martial Law, keeping their spirit alive as they were unable to see the future they dreamed of. <div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/9/21/ika-52-anibersaryo-ng-martial-law-idinaan-sa-protesta-1917">Ika-52 anibersaryo ng Martial Law, idinaan sa protesta</a></div>&quot;Marami na pong nauna samin mga estudyante na lider na lumaban at nakibaka at namatay dahil sa diktadurya ni Marcos Sr. Pinagpapatuloy namin ito ginugunita mga namatay at nagsakripisyo,&quot; he said.(Many student leaders before us fought, struggled, and died because of Marcos Sr.&#x27;s dictatorship. It is crucial for those in authority to remember that, in a democracy, power ultimately belongs to the people.)He added that ‘Never forget, never again’ is a commitment to our country’s future.&quot;Nakikita natin di lang Pilipinas buong mundo nauulit lahat yung problema natin sa kasaysayan pero siguro yung paninindigan natin na never forget, never again...Siguro yun po yung kailangan sa isang demokrasya yung commitment natin para sa ating bayan,&quot; he said.(We see that not only in the Philippines but around the world, our problems keep repeating.
