MANILA – Information that a former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief may have been involved in Alice Guo's escape from the country lacked basis and was a mere rumor, an official said Monday.

Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) Raul Villanueva, a retired military officer, told senators last week that an unnamed former PNP chief was supposedly on Guo's monthly payroll, based on unverified intelligence reports.

But PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief PMGen. Leo Francisco that he has since spoken with Villanueva, who said that the information was only based on rumors.

Following Villanueva’s clarification, the PNP will stop its investigation  into his statement, Francisco said.

"Sinabi naman niya na wala siyang basehan at wala siyang pruweba kaya what’s the use of investigation? Ang siguro ang maganda si Gen. Villanueva naman ang tanung niyo kung bakit naging ganoon ang statement niya sa Senate hearing," he said.

The PNP has yet to decide if it would file a complaint against the Pagcor official, Francisco said.

Guo admitted that she slipped out of the Philippines in early July following "threats" from individuals she refused to name. She was arrested in Indonesia last month.
