Vance boosts former president Donald Trump’s odds, compared to 41% who sees his nomination as a negative for Trump’s campaign.Some Filipinos in Minnesota said they were not surprised to see Walz’s positive effect on the Democratic campaign.&quot;He checks a lot of the boxes,&quot; said Gregory King of their state&#x27;s governor. &quot;It&#x27;s something many of us have been talking about for some time, that he fits the profile of a good vice presidential candidate.”Jacinta Rivera, meanwhile, said it was refreshing &quot;to see a progressive leader who is very dedicated to his cause of wanting equity for all of the different levels in our socioeconomic world.”Fil-Am Sarah Lancaster was named Minnesota’s Teacher of the Year in 2022, becoming the first teacher of Asian Pacific Islander descent to receive the award.She shared a recent conversation that she had with Walz where she said showed the Democratic vice presidential nominee&#x27;s sense of humility.  “He (Walz) said he was really proud to have such an amazing representative as Teacher of the Year and that really hit home,&quot; Lancaster said. &quot;He also said it&#x27;s harder to become Teacher of the Year than it is to become governor because he was a finalist for Minnesota Teacher of the Year, but he never became Teacher of the Year. So, that&#x27;s kind of a funny joke he always likes to make.”Rivera, whose parents&#x27; families hail from Ilocos Sur and Bulacan, said some older members of her family do not share her progressive stance.“I had also experienced Tim&#x27;s governorship during a very difficult time for the United States during the peak of COVID, during the George Floyd protest, which I have also participated in with my family and significant other,&quot; Rivera shared. She added: &quot;I still want to make sure that they&#x27;re (leaders) being held to a higher calling and making sure that we&#x27;re thinking of everyone and considering all of those voices.&quot;A Republican-controlled state Senate report had criticized Walz for not activating the National Guard sooner to prevent fiery riots that caused multi-million-dollar property damage after George Floyd’s killing by a police officer in May 2020.Vance initially criticized Walz for his response to the unrest but has since dropped the comments after audio recordings of Trump resurfaced, praising Walz for his handling of the George Floyd protests.Vance and Walz are scheduled to debate on Oct. 1 in New York.
