MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday said security measures remain in place to maintain order amid rising political tensions following the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

In a statement, PNP chief General Rommel Francisco Marbil said police personnel have been deployed in key areas to support public safety efforts and ensure order, as well as to assist as needed and respond to any developments.

“The Philippine National Police continues to monitor the situation closely and is fully prepared to respond to any developments. Our personnel have been strategically deployed to ensure peace and security nationwide,” he said.

On Tuesday, the PNP placed all police regional offices and national support units on heightened alert, instructing all uniformed personnel, particularly those engaged in police operations, to adopt proactive security measures and exercise heightened caution “for possible enemy atrocities.”

The memo emphasized the need to address potential threats to national peace and order, warning of possible civil disturbances, rallies, and mass actions stemming from the former president’s arrest.

“This pertains to the current nationwide peace and order where possible civil disturbance, rallies and mass actions may arise following the arrest of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte,” read part of the memo.

Regional directors were tasked with immediately enhancing border control points and preparing civil disturbance management contingents, such as the Reactionary Standby Support Force and quick reaction teams, to maintain public safety and ensure peace and order.

The PNP said the overall peace and order situation across the country remains generally peaceful, but the police are not letting their guard down.

“As of today, the situation across the country remains under control. The PNP assures the public of its continued vigilance and commitment to maintaining peace and security nationwide,” it said in a statement on Wednesday.
