MANILA - Permanently extending the operating hours of the MRT and LRT trains is not feasible according to the Department of Transportation. 

The DOTr said that while it understands that his may provide greater convenience to commuters, it may compromise the maintenance time of the rail systems which may lead to safety issues. 

Maintenance work on MRT and LRT lines take place during non-operating hours, a period critical for ensuring the safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operation of the trains during the day, the DOTr said.

"Without sufficient time for inspections, technical adjustments, as well as urgent and regular repairs, the risk to safety and operational disruptions increases significantly," the agency added.

It said maintenance crews work during non-operating hours to inspect tracks, repair train components, and address technical issues that could disrupt service if left unattended. 

"Reducing or eliminating this maintenance window could expose passengers to heightened risks of service delays or safety concerns," the DOTr added.

Party-list group Akbayan earleir called for the longer operating hours for the capital's main railways saying this will benefit BPO workers whose shifts generally start at night. Akbayan said MRT and LRT stations are also much safer for commuters as these have roving security guards.

The DOTr announced it would adjust the opening and closing times of the MRT and LRT, but only for a few days during the peak of the Christmas rush. Operating hours would return to their previous schedules after Christmas.

“We appreciate and understand the public’s desire for extended service hours, especially for those with late-night schedules. However, public safety and system integrity will always be our top priorities. Our goal is to avoid breakdowns and ensure that trains operate at peak efficiency during regular service hours,” DOTr added.

It said that other modes of transportation such as the EDSA bus carousel and jeepneys that are available on a 24-hour basis.
