MANILA — E-wallet platform GCash on Friday said it is willing to cooperate with the government in its bid to enforce stricter regulations on the online gambling industry.

Mobile wallets have come under fire for supposedly fueling the addiction of Filipinos by making it easier to access online gambling games.

Several lawmakers now want to ban e-wallets from having direct links to online gambling apps and online gambling promotions.

In a chance interview, G-Xchange Inc. President and CEO Ren-ren Reyes said it is already working with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) in implementing stricter policies.

“We definitely want to be a partner of the government in making sure that we do the responsible thing for this industry,” said Reyes.

“One thing to note is technology can be a very powerful tool in helping address the concerns of this particular issue so that’s what we’re trying to work with government (on)— kung ano po yung gusto po nila, iiimplement namin,” he added.

Recently, GCash removed clickable links to online gambling sites and placed more emphasis on responsible gambling on its app.

But Reyes said he believes this is something that the financial industry should discuss and address as a whole.

“We’re actually talking among the different e-wallets and banking partners to make sure that whatever the government needs for us to do, we can enable it for the market,” he said.
