MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. on Saturday inspected the Tangos-Tanza Navigational Gate in Navotas, which has been under repair since a barge damaged it in June 2024.

Several areas in Malabon and Navotas have been experiencing knee-deep to chest-deep floods due to heavy rains, high tide, and water from the floodgate.

Marcos Jr. did not give any interviews to the media.

Public Works and Highways Secretary Manny Bonoan, however, told reporters that they plan to put up a new gate to replace the damaged one.

“That will take some time, although sa department, mayroon na kaming mga plano diyan and how to finance it. Ang pag-uusapan na lang namin with the local government… is how to implement it,” said Bonoan.

He said he the DPWH will coordinate with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority on replacing the gate, which he said would provide "immediate relief" to keep the area from being flooded by water from Manila Bay.

“Palagay ko yun ang unahin namin (I think that is what we will do first),” he added.

AUGUST TARGET

Bonoan said they initially targeted to finish the repairs by July 20 but work had been pushed back by bad weather.

He said the department's new deadline to finish the repairs in August 8.

“Hindi kami makapasok kasi nagka-high tide tapos umuulan din... immediate ang pagpkukumpuni ng mga gaps ng retaining wall, ” he said.

(We could not do the work because of high tide and because of the rains)

The DPWH chief admitted the problem has persisted “for many many years” and that it is looking for a permanent solution to flooding in Navotas.

The planned new floodgate is undergoing detailed engineering design, he said, noting that the government is ready to finance it.

He said the repairs would at least help minimize flooding from Manila Bay.

The navigation gate was damaged after a barge forcefully entered the channel from the sea going to the shipyard in Navotas on June 7, 2024.
