Baculud, Ilagan, Isabela got flooded due to rains brought by severe tropical storm Kristine. <em>Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News/file</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA – The Philippines has imposed a temporary ban on the importation of live cattle, buffalo, and some byproducts from Japan following an outbreak of lumpy skin disease (LSD), the Department of Agriculture announced Thursday, December 19.</p><p>Based on the<a href="https://www.da.gov.ph/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/mo57_s2024.pdf"> Memorandum Order no. 57 </a>issued on Tuesday, the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) received a report from Japan indicating an outbreak of LSD in Maebaru, Fukuoka.</p><p>The first confirmed LSD case in the said country was detected at a farm in Itoshima and other infections were also detected at other farms in Fukuoka.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/business/2024/2/5/ban-on-live-cattle-imports-won-t-affect-industry-da-1913">Ban on live cattle imports won&#x27;t affect industry: DA</a></div><p>According to the Agriculture Department, LSD is a viral disease primarily affecting cattle and can lead to severe complications or death.</p><p>&quot;Symptoms include fever, nodules on the skin and internal organs, significant weight loss, swollen lymph nodes, and fluid accumulation under the skin,&quot; the DA said.</p><p>Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. stressed that the ban is crucial to &quot;protect the local cattle and water buffalo populations&quot; from the virus.</p><p>The ban extends to products like unpasteurized milk and milk products, embryos, skin, and semen used for artificial insemination.</p><p>However, there were some exemptions from the ban. The government greenlights importation of skeletal muscle meat, casings, gelatin and collagen, tallow, hooves and horns, blood meal and flour, bovine and water buffalo bones and hides, and pasteurized milk, as long as they &quot;meet Philippine import and health standards.&quot; </p><div><strong>Not transmissible to humans</strong></div><p>WOAH already stated that humans cannot be infected by the lumpy skin disease virus.</p><p>However, the virus will bring severe complications, or worse death, to some livestock animals which people nurture for business. </p><p>WOAH mentioned there were reported cases of animals suffering from high fever, enlarged superficial lymph nodes, swollen limbs and other ventral parts of the body, permanent or temporary infertility of bulls, and possible abortion of pregnant cows.</p><p>The mortality rate – or the number of animal deaths from the disease – ranges usually from 1 to 5%.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/business/2024/10/9/agri-dept-blacklists-3-food-importers-lifts-ban-on-us-goat-imports-1346">Agri dept blacklists 3 food importers; lifts ban on US goat imports</a></div>
