Prices of broccoli, other highland vegetables down : Agri dept

MANILA — The Department of Agriculture (DA) said on Thursday that the prices of highland vegetables are down almost by half.According to <a href="https://www.da.gov.ph/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Price-Monitoring-January-21-2025.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">data</a> from the DA, broccoli currently sells for around P180 per kilo down from P350 a kilo in December. Baguio beans meanwhile are currently selling for around P100 per kilo, down from P240 a kilo last month.Agriculture Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa noted that prices are down around 50 percent despite some highland vegetable-growing areas being affected by frost because of the cold weather.  De Mesa said this may be due to the volume of production of these vegetables.The DA meanwhile also highlighted the importance of cold storages as a solution to wastage of vegetables, which usually happens when there is an oversupply.&quot;Paulit-ulit na sinasabi ni Secretary, napakahalaga ng cold storage na maitayo para may iwasan yung kumbaga sudden changes sa presyuhan, whether pataas or pababa, at ma-insure yung kitakan ng ating mga farmers,&quot; De Mesa said.(The Secretary has repeatedly said that cold storages are important to avoid sudden changes in pricing, whether upward or downward.
