MANILA -- Some farmer groups asserted Tuesday that a floor price of P17 to P19 per kilo of wet palay was not enough following Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr.&#x27;s statement that his office was looking at setting the floor price at a minimum of P17 per kilo. Nagkakaisang Magsasakang Novo Ecijano (NAMANE)’s Crisostomo Marzan said during a press conference with other farmer groups that the government’s estimates for palay production cost were outdated.“Ang pinagbabasehan pa lamang nila na gastos sa isang kilong palay na aani noon pa pong 2023 hanggang 2024 na P14 ang gastos,&quot; Marzan said. &quot;Taong 2025 na po tayo ngayon. Halos triple na ang tinaas ng gastusin sa pagsasaka. Ang dating P800 sa isang pataba inaabot na ho na halos P2,000. Sa atin pong pagkukuwenta, pagtutuos… nasa P70,000 po ang gastos sa isang ektarya,&quot; he said.Groups like NAMANE, Amihan, and Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) have been calling for a P20 per kilo floor price.Farmers under NAMANE  gathered almost 15,000 signatures for a petition calling on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to set this floor price in the face of an alleged “deepening crisis for rice farmers caused by the government&#x27;s failure to act decisively and traders’ continued exploitation.”“Kung atin pong susumahin ‘yun pong iminumungkahi 17, 18, 19– kulang pa rin po. ‘Yung hinihiling namin na halagang P20 isang kilo ng bagong aning palay, mayroon po kaming kitang kaunti,” Marzan said.The KMP said farm gate prices for fresh palay were at P10 to P12 per kilogram, far below the production cost of a minimum of P14 per kilo. Most small farmers lack access to drying facilities or trucks needed to bring their products to the National Food Authority (NFA), which has led them to sell to private traders at lower prices, NAMANE said in a statement.Tiu Laurel earlier said they were waiting for an executive order to implement a floor price for palay, which is seen to be at a minimum of P17 per kilogram for wet palay.But Marcos wants this to be set at P18 or P19, Tiu Laurel said.<div> </div>
