<div> </div>MANILA — SM Hotels and Conventions Corp. (SMHCC) said it will open a massive new convention venue in Cebu by late 2026, as parent firm SM Prime Holdings Inc. as it pushes deeper into the country’s fast-growing MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry.The SMX Convention Center Seaside Cebu, slated to open in the fourth quarter of 2026, forms part of a P3.6-billion investment to build one of the largest meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions facilities in the Visayas. The six-level complex will offer more than 21,000 square meters of leasable space and seating for over 18,000 people, SMHCC said in a statement.With its launch, SMX’s portfolio will grow to over 80,000 square meters of leasable event space across 10 venues nationwide, including SMX Manila, SMX Aura in Taguig, SMX Bacolod, SMX Davao, SMX Clark and the planned SMXCITE in Pasay.“This regional expansion reaffirms our position as the largest private convention center network in the Philippines,” said Peggy Angeles, Executive Vice President of SMHCC. “After recent events, we hope SMX Seaside Cebu will play a meaningful role in revitalizing the province’s tourism and business landscape.”Pre-bookings are already in place, with Philconstruct Cebu slated for November 2026 and Wofex Visayas for April 2027, indicating strong early demand from MICE exhibitors.The company said the new center will follow SM Prime’s safety and disaster-preparedness standards, including compliance with seismic codes, regular evacuation drills and coordination with local emergency units.SMX Seaside Cebu is part of the 26-hectare South Coast City project, a master-planned hub in Cebu that will also feature the SM Seaside City Arena. Officials said Cebu’s strong tourism appeal and connectivity through Mactan-Cebu International Airport reinforce its position as a premier events destination.SM Prime Holdings earlier said its net income for the first nine months of the year rose 10 percent to P37.2 billion, lifted by steady growth in its mall and convention center businesses.Hotels and convention centers posted the fastest growth at 9 percent, rising to P6 billion from P5.5 billion, driven by higher MICE bookings, the company has said.
