<p>MANILA — Thick smoke was seen at the baggage carousel area of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 on Monday afternoon, causing concern among airline passengers.</p><p>The New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) confirmed that a smoke incident indeed took place at 4:55 p.m., but assured the public that it was already contained.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/5/9/naia-terminals-undergo-urgent-safety-review-following-deadly-crash-1125"><strong>NAIA terminals undergo urgent safety review following deadly crash</strong></a></div><p>They said the smoke was observed coming from Baggage Carousel 3. Responders identified the source as a power bank that had was believed to have fallen from a passenger’s luggage into the carousel system.</p><p>&quot;The device caused a minor spark, which produced the smoke. There was no open flame, and the carousel remained fully operational after testing,&quot; said the NNIC in a statement.</p><p>The NNIC said cleanup was conducted in area shortly after, and terminal operations continued without disruption.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/5/6/suv-driver-in-naia-tragedy-tests-negative-for-drugs-alcohol-1839"><strong>SUV driver in NAIA tragedy tests negative for drugs, alcohol</strong></a></div><p>“We thank all responding teams and partner agencies for their swift action.
