MANILA -- The Department of Energy on Wednesday clarified that owners of electric vehicles, be it full electric or hybrid, are exempt from any vehicle reduction scheme like the number coding system that is about to be expanded by the government due to the rebuilding of EDSA.

In a letter addressed to MMDA Chairman Romando Artes, the DOE reminded MMDA that electric vehicles are exempt from any vehicle reduction program as stated in the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act for 8 years from the effectivity of the law.

DOE Director Atty. Patrick Aquino says there are only around 24,000 e-vehicles registered by LTO out of the 14.6 million total registered vehicles in 2024.

Aquino says the small number of e-vehicles will not really affect the rebuilding efforts in EDSA slated to start this month and will run for 2 years.

As more people would want to get electric vehicles to get away with the coding, the industry says it is ready to accommodate the potential increase in demand.

Edmund Araga, President of the Electric Vehicles Association of the Philippines says there are a number of e vehicle brands that offer various models depending on the budget capacity of consumers.

Aquino says more charging stations are now available so that even consumers who worry about the lack of charging facilities in their condominiums can still charge thru malls, gas stations and mobile facilities.
