MANILA — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Monday warned it will intensify its campaign against unregistered and unsafe vehicles. The LTO said motorists should always keep their motor vehicles in good condition and that they are safe and fit to be operated. The campaign will also target unregistered motor vehicles and expired licenses as a significant number of the said violations surged recently, the agency said, citing its own data.“We are already finalizing our campaign plan and coordination with concerned agencies in implementing the intensified campaign against motor vehicles with expired registration and those unsafe and unfit motor vehicles on the roads,” said Mendoza.Motor vehicles with expired registration and those deemed unfit or unsafe for the road will be impounded and their operators fined, the LTO said. Vehicles with clearly defective parts such as broken windshields, exposed or hanging parts, bald tires, excessive emissions, or major visible structural damage will be impounded.Mendoza said they plan to start the campaign by August this year.“This should serve as a notice to motor vehicles to comply with your obligation to keep the registration of your motor vehicles updated; otherwise, it would need to go to a more stringent process before renewal,” said Mendoza.The LTO said the Marcos administration aims to reduce road crashes in the country by at least 35 percent until 2028 under the Philippine Road Safety Action Plan.
