<p>MANILA — Several groups held a protest on Monday to demand more action from the government in the face of rising oil prices due to the conflict in the Middle East.</p><p>Transport group PISTON said that instead of just handing out fuel subsidies, which would only benefit some sectors, Malacañang should suspend excise taxes on fuel so that more people will be able to find relief.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/6/23/philippines-readies-fuel-subsidy-program-as-oil-prices-soar-1043">READ: Philippines readies fuel subsidy program as oil prices soar</a></div><p>“Sinong nakikinabang? Saan nila binibigay? Doon sa mga pumasok sa modernization… Kapag hindi ka miyembro ng korporasyon o kooperatiba, hindi ka halos makatanggap ng subsidy,” said PISTON National President Mody Floranda.</p><p>Floranda also downplayed the impact of the government’s request to oil companies to implement a staggered increase in fuel prices.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/6/23/oil-firms-agree-to-staggered-fuel-price-hikes-energy-dept-1351">READ: Oil firms agree to staggered fuel price hikes -- Energy dept</a></div><p>“Parang ang gustong palabasin, may utang na loob tayo dahil hindi biglaan? Ang esensya nun, parang bibitayin ka ng January, gawin nating Marso para hindi bigla. Pero bitay ka pa rin,” he said.</p><p>The protesters also urged the government to also junk the Oil Deregulation Law, which allows oil companies to set their own prices for petroleum products, removing government control over pricing and importation.</p><p>“Ang nakinabang sa Oil Deregulation Law ay walang iba kundi itong oil cartel… na ginagamit ang tensyon sa West Asia para magkamal ng super tubo kahit meron silang imbak na langis.
