Unconsolidated jeepneys included in fuel subsidy program: DOTr

MANILA (UPDATED) — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Tuesday said that even unconsolidated jeepney operators and drivers would receive fuel subsidies amid the increase in pump prices.

The clarification comes after the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) earlier said that beneficiaries have to apply or be part of a transport cooperative or corporation.

A staggered increase in oil prices was set to start on Tuesday following global supply concerns due to the escalating conflict between Israel, Iran and the United States.

Department of Energy officer-in-charge Sharon Garin said the government was prepared to distribute the subsidies to public utility vehicle drivers, farmers, and fisherfolk severely affected by the high oil costs.

How much and when this would be distributed, however, have yet to be determined.

“Ang definite lang dun ay yung P2.5 billion for subsidy for PUVs but the individual distribution, kung magkano ang tatanggapin per recipient, it depends kung sino ang makakatanggap at ilan ang makakatanggap,” Garin told reporters in a Palace briefing.

“Currently, the DOE, DA, and DOTr are meeting and DOTr is also hard at work determining the number of the recipients, kung sino ba talaga ang makakatanggap. But DOTr [has] already identified and they are just finishing up the listing,” she added.

Asked if this would be released within the week, she said this depends on the transportation department.

The official also announced the "good news" that crude oil prices went down earlier today at $69 per barrels.

Transport group Manibela earlier said it wanted the subsidy to be at least P8,000 per month, citing the previous amount of P6,500.

Manibela Chairperson Mar Valbuena said he hoped the subsidy would be rolled out by July 10.

Aside from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, the DOTr is also coordinating with the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to assist tricycle drivers, as well as other agencies for ride-hailing services and other affected stakeholders.
