MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will have to review proposed wage hikes in the 20th Congress to see if small businesses can shoulder the additional cost or if it would result into layoffs, a Palace official said on Tuesday.Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro gave the statement in reaction to queries on whether or not Malacañang supports several House and Senate lawmakers who filed separate bills seeking for another wage hike.“Pag-aaralan ito kung kakayanin ba talaga kasi kung magdudulot naman ito ng lay-off dahil hindi kakayanin ng karamihang maliliit na mga negosyante, mas marami pong mahihirapang mga manggagawa dahil  baka mawalan sila ng trabaho,” Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said in a Palace briefing.“Sa lahat po ng kakayanin ng administrasyon at sa pakikipag-usap sa lahat ng stakeholders – mga manggagawa, mga negosyante, mga investors – lahat po ito ay pakikinggan para na rin a kabutihan ng lahat, hindi lamang para sa manggagawa, hindi lang para sa mga investors o sa mga negosyante, para po sa lahat,” she said.“Kaya po itong lahat ng ito ay pag-aaralan para sa ikabubuti po ng lahat,” she said.The national government has repeatedly said that 99 percent of businesses in the Philippines are classified as micro, small and medium enterprises.Meanwhile, the regional wage board in the National Capital Region recently approved a P50 wage hike for private sector workers.
