After floods near MRT-7 Batasan station, MMDA builds new bigger inlets

MANILA — The Metropolitan Manila Development Auhtority  o MMDA has built two larger inlets under  the MRT-7 Batasan Station along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City to allow floodwaters to drain faster.The previously inlet, or water entry point, was too small and was identified as the main cause of flooding along Commonwealth Avenue at the height of last week’s monsoon rain.From its original size of just 1 square foot, two new inlets have now been constructed, each measuring 2 x  3 meters. These are made with grating or crossbars forming a grid or mesh to let water pass through while filtering out trash and debris.“Actually temporary pa lang yung bakal  mayroon kaming ilalagay diyan na mas maayos na grating ah pinafabricate lamang  para mas matibay ,pwdeng daanan  kahit ng truck” said MMDA Chairman Atty. Romando “Don” Artes.Chairman Artes hopes the newly built inlets will  effectively  help solve the flooding problem  when heavy rains pour again.However, in case flooding recurs because an MRT-7 post is blocking the major outlet, Artes assured the public that mobile pumps are on standby to channel the water into the nearby Ilang-Ilang Creek.“Kasi nga naharangan ng isang poste  yung major outlet doon , so kung mabubulunan pa rin dahil doon sa  poste, maglagay tayo ng pump  na sisipsipin yung tubig para mailabas papunta sa creek, and hopefully maging sufficient siya  para ma-address  yung problem ng pagbaha dito sa Commonwealth” Artes added.Chairman Artes personally inspected the new inlets on Monday morning. The larger inlets were built with the help of the DPWH, MRT-7 management, and the local government of Quezon City.
