MANILA – Four out of 5 companies in the Philippines are willing to hire recent senior high school graduates if their skills are certified, the Technical Education And Skills Development Authority (TESDA) said on Wednesday.During the post-State of the Nation Address (SONA) discussion in San Juan City, TESDA Director-General Kiko Benitez said around 175,000 recently-graduated SHS students have so far received NC-II and NC-III certficates.“Malaking bagay sa ngayon, according to the service of industry and business, four out of five companies are willing to hire senior high school students kung mayroon silang certification ng kanilang skills,” said Benitez.“We are also creating a higher level of NCs para malinaw ang career progression ng ating mag-aaral, kung gusto nila pumunta ng trabaho agad, andiyan ang TESDA assessment,” he added.TESDA, he said, and the labor department are currently aligning their registry and training group to the Public Employment Service Office for market intelligence.In a chance interview with reporters, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said there would be no changes on the implementation of K-12 amid criticism.“Sa ngayon batas yan eh. So basta hindi inaamyendahan ng Kongreso yan, ang commitment ng ating Pangulo is pagandahin ang implementasyon at pagandahin ang tsansa ng mga tao, relevant ang mga kurso na kinukuha o mga subject,” he said.President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in June admitted that the K-12 program failed to deliver on its promise to equip Filipino students for employment and gave additional economic burden to parents.Marcos, in an interview, said that he shares the frustration of lawmakers like Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, who want the mandatory Senior High School system under the K-12 program scrapped.The President however, also said his administration was working closely with the private sector to improve the current education system under the K-12 program and address the problem of skills mismatch.
