MANILA -- Low-cost carrier AirAsia is planning to buy 150 more aircraft, just a few days after announcing a deal with Airbus for up to 70 A321XLR planes worth $12.25 billion.At the opening of the new headquarters of AirAsia Philippines, Capital A CEO and founder Tony Fernandes hinted that the group will buy more planes, with details to be announced in a few weeks’ time.Deputy Group CEO Chester Voo talked to reporters after the opening event and confirmed that AirAsia will be signing another deal soon, with the goal of having 500 aircraft within 10 years. Currently, the AirAsia group has about 255 planes.“It’s gonna be about 150 aircraft… Newer generation aircraft will save about 30 percent of operational cost,” Voo said.He added: “We’re looking to grow to 500 aircraft within the next 10 years. That’s our projection for growth and also to increase our destinations from 143 to 175.”With the new orders, the Philippines is expected to get 2 to 4 aircraft per year. AirAsia Philippines CEO and President Capt. Suresh Bangah said the new planes will help them expand their operations. He added that the A321XLR can fly up to 8-9 hours, so a direct flight to India from Manila will be possible.“That gives us great flexibility to fly out of Philippines right up to India. India is a big market and a great market for Philippine tourism,” Bangah said.However, he admitted that there are still limited slots at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, and any expansion would also depend on the airport and not just on new planes. But he said there is an ongoing route study so the local airline can strategize the destinations for both domestic and international flights.“We are not gonna end the growth just because there are some slots issues and all that. We are way forward and looking at other places how to grow because we want to build a very big and robust network domestically,” Bangah said.AirAsia Philippines&#x27; new headquarters in Pasay, right across from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3, will be the new home of 1,500 employees. Its opening was attended by Fernandes as well as several officials from the government, including Senator Erwin Tulfo and officials from the Manila International Airport Authority, Civil Aeronautics Board, Office for Transportation Security, and many others.
