<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1755141609620Screenshot 2025-08-14 at 11.19.32 AM.png" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><div><br/></div><p>MANILA <strong>(UPDATED)</strong> -- Building a new Kamuning footbridge and renovating the EDSA Busway station closest to it will cost around P89 million, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said Thursday.<br id="isPasted"/><br/>The total cost of the project is at P89,129,402.57, according to a project briefer obtained by ABS-CBN News.<br/><br/>The new covered footbridge will connect the Kamuning Busway Station to the northbound and southbound sides of EDSA. It will have covered stairways, 2 elevators and a wheelchair lifter.<br/><br/>&quot;These elevators/manlifts/wheelchair lifters are vital for inclusive accessibility,&quot; the project briefer noted.<br/><br/>Photos of the Kamuning footbridge first went viral in 2018 after social media users noted that it was too high.<br/><br/>Jojo Garcia, who was general manager of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) at that time, said they built the footbridge after they saw several instances of pedestrians being run over by vehicles as they crossed EDSA, or falling prey to thieves in the dimly-lit area.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/video/news/11/05/18/too-high-mmda-defends-kamuning-footbridge" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Too high? MMDA defends Kamuning footbridge</a></div><p>Garcia said the MMDA cannot reduce the bridge&#x27;s height because it needs to be 3 to 4 meters above the power lines of the MRT-3 for safety reasons.<br id="isPasted"/><br/>Celine Pialago, then the MMDA&#x27;s spokesperson, also said that the cost for the P10-million bridge would have ballooned if it were a tunnel-type structure.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/11/06/18/mmda-says-reviewing-comments-vs-qc-footbridge" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MMDA says reviewing comments vs QC footbridge</a>            </div><p>The MMDA added landing areas and solar-powered lights to the controversial footbridge in <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/01/16/19/look-reconstructed-stairway-to-heaven-kamuning-footbridge-opened-for-use" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">2019</a>.              </p><p>In June this year, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the DOTr to <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/6/4/marcos-jr-wants-mt-kamuning-footbridge-torn-down-replaced-dotr-2031" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">demolish the &quot;Mt. Kamuning Footbridge&quot;</a> — called that because of its steep incline — and replace it with one that is more accessible.  </p><p>According to the project briefer, the new Kamuning footbridge should be built within 120 days after the contractor has received a notice to proceed.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/6/6/-mt-kamuning-footbridge-to-be-replaced-within-6-months-dotr-1238" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">&#x27;Paspasan talaga&#x27;: DOTr eyes replacement to &#x27;Mt. Existing waiting sheds and railings will be replaced. Tactile paving surfaces, often featuring raised dots or lines, will help the bus stop become accessible for the visually impaired.<br id="isPasted"/><br/>The station&#x27;s waiting sheds, lighting, and digital clocks will also be improved, the DOTr said.<br/><strong><br/>COMPLETION TIME</strong><br/><br/>Meanwhile, the DOTr said it eyes the completion of the new Kamuning footbridge by December this year.<br/><br/>DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, and other government officials inspected the GMA-Kamuning EDSA Bus Carousel bus stop on THursday in preparation for the start of the construction of the new EDSA busway Kamuning concourse.<br/><br/>Dizon said this will be the replacement of the controversial footbridge in the area.<br/><br/>&quot;The target is to finish both the footbridge and the station by December, that’s our promise,”  Dizon told reporters.<br/><br/>“Hindi na siya matarik at sabi nga ng ating mga designers…fully compliant siya sa mobility and accessibility standards - malapad, hindi matarik, hindi masyadong matataas yung steps ay merong elevator both sides at merong wheelchair lift sa gitna para talagang accessible siya,” he added.<br/><br/>Belmonte supports the projects, adding that QC LGU is open to discuss with the national government other projects that will help ease the daily commute of the public.</p><p>“This is something that we can discuss with the national government at the end of the day, that is not acceptable to us because its inconvenience, its not acceptable to us - its not inclusive, it leaves out many vulnerable sectors and that is contrary to our vision of an inclusive infrastructure program so kailangan mawala yan at kailangan ipakita rin na may political will ang pamahalaan - both the local and the national na tugunan yung reklamo ng mga taonbayan sa kaligtasan sa kanilang convenience,” according to Belmonte.<br id="isPasted"/><strong><br/>WELCOME DEVELOPMENT</strong><br/><br/>Mobility advocacy group Move As One Coalition co-convener Robert Siy, meanwhile, welcomes the new project but said, in other countries, there are better infrastructure projects that are commuter friendly.<br/><br/>“Ito improvement ito sa Mt. Kamuning, alam natin na hirap yung mga Pilipino sa pagtawid dito sa EDSA and yung Mt. Kamuning as inaccessible. Anyone who has physical incapacity - it would be impossible to use Mt. Kamuning. Importante yung may elevator, may accessibility for persons with disability,” according to Siy.  <br/><br/>“Actually yung best practice sa ibang bansa is what we called at grade, meaning….ground level yung crossing dito sa EDSA tapos may traffic light  -  this enable access for everyone,” Siy added.<br/><br/>Dizon also assured the public that these projects will not cause traffic jam in the area.<br/><br/>“Sabi nga ng Pangulo, hindi na makakapaghintay ang mga komyuter natin.
