<p>MANILA — Meralco said it is intensifying its campaign to clear dangling cables from cable TV and internet service providers.  </p><p>In an operation in Makati City, Meralco Spokesman Joe Zaldarriaga said the company has already tidied up over 50 tons of unsightly cables in its franchise area.</p><p>Zaldarriaga said the urban blight situation worsened during the pandemic when a number of service providers illegally installed wires for internet and cable TV connections.</p><p>According to Zaldarriaga, these unauthorized cables are heavy they affect the integrity of electric posts and cause them to collapse.</p><div><strong>LOCAL GOVERNMENT AUTHORITY</strong></div><p>Makati Mayor Nancy Binay said she supports Meralco&#x27;s campaign on anti-dangling and unauthorized wire attachments.</p><p>The mayor said anyone who wants to set up wires, be it for power, cable or internet, should first get a permit from the local government unit.</p><p>According to Binay, there should be a strict scheme in order to avoid accidents like fire due to dangling cables.</p><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/IhTgnaQHJ3s?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br/></div><div><strong>ERC DECISION AWAITED TODAY OR TOMORROW</strong></div><p>Meanwhile, Meralco said the company is waiting for the decision of the Energy Regulatory Commission on the joint motion filed by the utility and First Gen for the interim extension of the power supply agreement to supply 1,000 MW of electricity until January 31, 2026.</p><p>Zaldarriaga explained that Meralco joined First Gen in the motion in consideration of the security of supply to ensure that meralco has enough power supply.</p><p>The ERC earlier said it will have to carefully study the issue as extending the contract will likely mean higher electricity rates for consumers.</p><p>If Meralco contracts more than it can use, the contracted plant will still have to be paid, even if its electricity is not used or even if the plant is a standby.</p><p>On the other hand, if the ERC does not approve the contract extension, there will be reduced power supply for the whole of the Luzon, which may impact on the reliability of the grid.</p><p>The ERC is currently holding an en banc session and will issue a decision either today or Thursday, when the current Meralco-First Gen power contract expires.</p><div><br/></div><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ebdw2XDsEpQ?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br/></div>
