Gov't launches student Beep cards

MANILA — Just present your school ID, and you can get a discounted Beep card right away. Students can now get a 50 percent fare discount on their train fares using the newly programmed special Beep cards at the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 lines.The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Aug. 13 announced that personalized white Beep cards, similar to the ones used by senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs), will have the half-fare discount already programmed into them starting the second week of September.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/8/13/student-beep-cards-with-automatic-50-pct-fare-discount-to-launch-in-september-0802" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Student Beep cards with automatic 50 pct fare discount to launch in September</a></div>To avail the P30 special white Beep cards, students must present a valid school ID or a certificate of registration for the current school year to the student lane on any of the major train lines in Metro Manila. After showing proof of being a student, the personalized card will then be printed on the spot. The card is valid for one year. This allows commuters to instantly receive their cards at designated ticket counters, without having to wait for the previous five working days of processing. The expansion of the fare discount from 20 percent to 50 percent began in June to help ease the financial burden on students and parents.This covers students from kindergarten to graduate school, along with learners from the Alternative Learning System (ALS) and Special Education (SPED).“Well, upon directive ni [DOTr] Secretary Vince [Dizon] at ni Presidente, for as long as student ka, regardless kung anong level, i-cover na namin,” MRT-3 General Manager Mike Capati told ABS-CBN News.According to Capati, commuters who will lose their Beep cards have to issue a certificate of loss and have it validated before resubmitting credentials like ID or any proof of enrollment.“Madali lang naman &#x27;yan, mga 5 to 10 minutes lang mapapalitan din,” he said. The railway chief described the student Beep card as a concessionaire pass, noting that it would not be purchasable outside the train lines. “Kasi pag sinabi mo yung student card, they have to present their credentials and input din yung information nila doon mismo sa card,” Capati said. “Hindi siya yung ordinary beep card you can buy anywhere.”He added that old cards, as well as those reported lost, will be blacklisted. Aside from cutting long queues to purchase discounted tickets, the personalized card will have no daily limits and avoid hassle.Before easing the access, commuters needed to fill out forms in ticket counters to claim the fare discount only for single-journey tickets. However, unlike special Beep cards for senior citizens and PWDs that are valid for a lifetime, student Beep cards will need to be renewed every school year. “Diba, halimbawa inisyuhan ka ngayong September 1. So babalik ka ulit ng September 1 because expired na yan next year,” Capati said.“So one year lang talagang validity niyan. So you need to present again that you are enrolled.”Beep cards are reloadable stored-value cards that allow commuters easier and more convenient access to Metro Manila’s railways.
