MANILA – The Philippine Competition Commission said it can recover the alleged ill-gotten wealth from flood control contractors through fines that can go up to over a hundred million pesos. During the Senate hearing on Tuesday over the issue, an official of the PCC told Senator Bam Aquino that bid-rigging for the flood control contracts carries a fine of P110 million for the first offense.Atty. Christian De Los Santos, Director of the PCC Enforcement Office, said the fine goes up to P250 million for the succeeding offense. As fines pile up per instance, they could total to over a billion pesos, the PCC official told Sen. Aquino.“So kung nakasampung kontrata ako, pwedeng P1 billion yun. In fact, more. Baka pwedeng P2 billion yun ang multa sa&#x27;yo,” said Aquino.Officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways who helped rig the bids for the flood control contracts can also be held liable as they can “be prosecuted or filed as facilitators,” De Los Santos said.“Pinag-uusapan kasi natin kanina with Secretary Remulia kung gaano koahalaga na hindi lang makulong yung mga kasangkot kung hindi mabalik rin yung pera,” said Aquino.“Yung isang paraan, yung voluntary na posibleng sila na mismo magbabalik bilang sign of good faith.
