<p>When couples fight over money, it’s usually not just about money.  More often than not, it’s about spending habits.</p><p>As we get closer to the year’s most celebrated romantic holiday, how you and your partner decide to celebrate may make you closer or drift further apart.</p><p>Many couples push back money conversations, not because they’re not important, but because they make them uncomfortable. No one wants to come across as questioning their partner’s priorities, or generosity, even values.</p><p>Yet in today’s economy, where rising prices, unstable income streams, and family financial responsibilities are part of daily life, avoiding the subject can put a strain on both your finances and relationship.</p><p>Differences in spending habits are quite common. What matters is how you address them: don’t wait until too late, with honesty plus mutual respect.  Here are 7 ways to start the money talk and manage spending differences as a couple.</p><div><strong>#1 Timing is everything</strong></div><p>Avoid discussing the issue of spending immediately after a purchase or during a disagreement.  When one is upset, your conversation may lead to the other being defensive and what you hope to avoid, a fight.</p><p>Instead, choose a neutral time, like when you are staying in for a relaxing weekend.  You don’t want an audience for a money talk, so it’s not a good idea to do it when dining out or with family.  Giving each other a heads-up will also help.  A planned conversation means you are both prepared for the talk mentally, and not going to argue over a single expense.</p><div><strong>#2 Respect your differences</strong></div><p>Opposites attract and opposites also attack.  It’s rare for a couple to have the same spending mindset.  Maybe one of you is more cautious, prioritizing savings and security. Meanwhile, the other value experiences and quality of life, which can be costly.</p><p>Talking about money does not mean one of you has to change personalities and become more like the other.  It’s all about compromise, adjusting habits, and respecting your differences.</p><div><strong>#3 Share what you own and owe</strong></div><p>A good place to start is to discuss how much money is coming in and how much money is going out.  This can be easier for couples where only one works and has a stable income.  But what it both of you work, and the other only takes on freelance projects?  Or maybe you both have full-time jobs but do side hustles?</p><p>In some of these scenarios, your income likely goes up and down.  In the meantime, there are fixed expenses that need to be paid including rent, utilities, loan payments, even extended family support.  When you both know how much money is going out, you can look at your pooled income and agree to prioritize.</p><p>And yes, it’s okay not to share all your income.  Sometimes you want to keep something for yourself.  You don’t need to give exact figures down to the centavo, but you need a shared understanding to better manage spending and expectations.</p><div><strong>#4 Consider family obligations</strong></div><p>One dynamic that Filipino couples have to consider in their money talks is family obligations.  Maybe one of you has a family that counts on his or her financial support.  Or it could be both of you.  That support may be regular or when needed, but it’s also a spending habit that you need to discuss as partners.</p><p>Are you supporting your elderly parents?  Maybe helping siblings?  Or expected to contribute whenever there are celebrations and emergencies?  These family obligations can weigh heavily on your partner or on both of you so you need to agree on how to move forward.  The goal here is to find the right balance, not necessarily withdrawal of family support.</p><div><strong>#5 Make financial peace of mind a priority</strong></div><p>Managing spending habits is not just about bank balances but also peace of mind. If frequent spending makes one of you or both anxious about paying rent and utilities, or helping out with family needs, then you really need to have the money talk.  </p><p>Share how overspending affects you, not just your wallet but also mentally so your partner will know this is not about control, but about emotional and financial well-being.</p><p>Avoid saying “your spending” which can make the other person feel targeted.  Instead, talk about shared goals like “I want us to start saving for a car.”  This way you reinforce the idea that financial decisions affect both of you and should be managed together.</p><div><strong>#6 Set financial priorities and boundaries</strong></div><p>Many couples set spending limits for one another but before you do that, it’s important to discuss your priorities.  Is it building an emergency fund, or saving for a home, or moving out of parents’ home, or reducing debt?  By agreeing on goals, you make it about priorities and not about restrictions.</p><p>To meet your goals, you’ll also need to set a budget or spending boundaries.  They can be a monthly spending amount for one another as their no-questions-asked money, or a set amount for purchases that require discussion e.g. anything over P10,000.</p><p>Nowadays, where we use cash, cards, and e-wallets, tracking spending has become trickier, but with intentional effort, you can make it happen.</p><div><strong>#7 Keep the money talk going</strong></div><p>Money talks should not happen only in times of financial trouble.  You can schedule this monthly as part of tracking your goals, or every quarter if there are no signs of trouble.</p><p>You can use these regular check-ins to look at expenses, adjust goals if needed, and address concerns if any. If one of you repeatedly ignores agreed boundaries or avoids financial discussions altogether, you may need to acknowledge that the issue goes beyond spending habits.</p><p>While money does not define a relationship, it can help make it last.</p>
