MANILA -- First Gen Corporation on Thursday celebrated the 50th anniversary of its subsidiary Energy Development Corporation (EDC).The celebration also marked 50 years of geothermal energy development in the Philippines.During the celebration, First Gen announced major projects and plans this year, including the upgrade of existing facilities to improve the power capacity of geothermal plants. The company is also expanding its other portfolio, including solar and hydro projects.“Power plants naman some of it needs rehabilitation. We’re waiting for the spare parts to come, and then we’ll be able to increase the output from that one. Same thing in the case of Negros, we have an upgrade plan which will start by the end of the year,” said First Gen President Francis Giles Puno.First Gen has about 1,400 megawatts of geothermal power and hundreds of megawatts more for wind, hydro, and solar.First Gen is also planning to start overseas exploration this year. The company is looking at six sites in Indonesia with at least 440 MW power capacity in total.“We’re also looking at drilling for the very first time in Indonesia. So that’s a big milestone,” Puno said.EDC President and COO Jerome Cainglet added, “We’re looking at around $30 million siguro initially for the exploration and initial drilling… It’s a new opportunity to grow.”EDC was created in 1976 and was tasked to develop geothermal plants in the country. EDC, which was a government agency, was privatized and became a subsidiary of First Gen in 2007. It is now the largest vertically integrated geothermal producer in the world.First Gen has also unveiled its new unified corporate brand - the First Gen Group with three sub-brands. It puts all its power-generating assets, including those under EDC, now housed under ‘First Gen Renewables’. First Gen Energy Supply matches the power generation assets with the needs of customers to meet demand and sustainability goals. First Gen Energy Solutions is the group’s arsenal of solutions to help customers make sense of their electricity needs and consumption.
