MANILA — Germany maintains its bullish outlook for the Philippines as a key economic player in Southeast Asia, despite current global challenges. At the 5th Embassy Night by the Phil Biz News, German Ambassador Dr. Andreas Michael Pfaffernoschke renewed calls for the Philippine government to continue refining the business environment. &quot;This country needs a red carpet, and not red tape,&quot; said Pfaffernoschke. The German ambassador notes a high level of interest from German and European firms in the country, in sectors ranging from renewable energy and electronics to healthcare and digital services. But bureaucratic red tape has been seen as a critical hurdle for foreign businesses, given the complexity of local regulations, permits and processes. &quot;I think the government is working to enhance the business conditions in this country and, of course, the German business community is eagerly looking forward to that,&quot; Pfaffernoschke said. The Philippines has been focusing on digital-driven reforms aimed at eliminating bureaucratic friction and modernizing the regulatory landscape to attract high-value investments. European businesses also see opportunities with the Philippines amid shifting global trade alliances. &quot;I think we all live in really challenging times where supply chains are being reshaped, the companies are rethinking this in terms of geopolitical considerations, where to go, where to invest and for decision makers it is important for red tape to be diminished,&quot; said Pfaffernoschke. Germany currently stands as a significant trading partner of the Philippines in the European Union with total bilateral trade volume estimated within the $6.7B–$7.0B range in early 2026, based on aggregated figures from the Philippine Statistics Authority and the German Federal Statistical Office.
