MANILA — Ayala Corporation’s ACMobility is seen to significantly grow this year and is even dubbed as the next ‘GCash moment’ for the company. This pertains to the surge of GCash during the Covid-19 pandemic, which is also seen to happen to the electric vehicle (EV) segment. Ayala President and CEO Cezar Consing said the growth of its EV business has been very strong, further fueled by the oil price hikes. He said ACMobility’s EV units from BYD and hybrids from KIA posted strong performances. “GCash moment. We come into this year not expecting the kind of externalities that benefit ACMobility. In the same way we went into Covid, not realizing completely that GCash will all of a sudden elevate itself,” Consing said. ACMobility CEO Jaime Alfonso Zobel de Ayala reported that BYD alone sold 25,094 units in 2025 up from just 5,106 in 2024. 62 percent of cars sold by ACMobility in 2025 are electric vehicles- both battery and hybrid. ACMobility has either a distribution business or retail business for brands like BYD, KIA, Denza, and Isuzu. The EV growth has been happening even before the fuel price shocks brought by the Middle East crisis. But Zobel de Ayala said the war further pushed demand for EV up. He added that there has been a 200 percent increase in BYD searches online from February to March and initial estimates saw a good number of units sold. “The March and what looks like April numbers start to indicate a kind of demand consumers have for this new technology… We estimate penetration in March and April somewhere around 20-23 percent of new vehicles sold,” he said noting that in 2025 the total market share of new EVs is 12 percent. He added, “The situation in the Middle East has convinced a lot of stakeholders in different sectors now seriously consider making the transition to electrified mobility sooner rather than later.” Zobel de Ayala also said that he projects that up to 50 percent of new cars sold in the Philippines could be new energy vehicles by 2030. And he wants ACMobility to get a big chunk of that market. “If you look at indicators which are website leads, showroom walk-ins, other types of reservations, all indicators are working very strong,” he said. ACMobility estimates that of new cars sold this year, 18 percent would be EVs. The company is also expected to hit profitability this year. Data from the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) showed that 11,800 EVs have been sold for the first quarter of 2026, up from 8,664 of the same period last year. This represents 11.1 percent of total new vehicles sold.On a month-on-month comparison, 3,054 EVs were sold in February 2026 before the Middle East war, but that number grew by 101.3 percent to 6,148 units sold in March 2026. Biggest chunk is the hybrid vehicles, followed by battery electric vehicles which saw a 485.9 percent month-on-month increase.
