MANILA -- One Visayas power plant will be available again starting Tuesday, June 2, helping boost the power supply in the area, the Department of Energy (DOE) said Monday.The DOE said KEPCO SPC Unit 2 is expected to return to service on June 2.The Energy Department said the current energy supply shortfall is because of the outage of four big power plants: Therma Visayas Units 1 and 2, Panay Energy Development Corporation (PENDC) Unit 3, and KEPCO SPC Unit 2.The DOE said PENDC Unit 3 will resume operations on July 3. Therma Visayas Units 1 may return by August 30, and Unit 2 by August 22.The bureau has also said it has instructed the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) to proceed with direct negotiations for additional ancillary services for the Visayas. The DOE is eyeing at least 150 MW of additional ancillary capacity for the Visayas grid.The agency also said it is planning to deploy power barges, modular diesel-generating units, and battery energy storage systems (BESS). A 30 MW BESS facility in Mactan, Cebu is undergoing final testing, while negotiations are underway for at least 20 MW of modular diesel generation capacity.The Visayas grid is on Yellow Alert for the <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/6/1/visayas-grid-on-yellow-alert-for-4th-week-1013" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">4th straight week</a>.
